- INFO 5200, Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threat (SWOT) Assignment
- The purpose of the SWOT assignment is for students to learn how to use the tool for library-related strategic planning.
- April 2020 (Spring Semester)
- Final grade in the INFO 5200 course: B
Annotation 8C states, "The concepts behind, and methods for, assessment and evaluation of library services and their outcomes." The attached SWOT assignment achieves this competency because it includes an evaluation of library service. A SWOT analysis is often used in various strategic planning phases to help an organization identify gaps and value streams in its service delivery system. In this assignment, I evaluated a mock ornithology special collection of a small college library. The evaluation's result was that the special collections' strength lay in the esoteric knowledge of its staff. However, because the collection is siloed, there was a risk in knowledge retention.
Annotation 8D addresses the needed skills for identifying stakeholders by stating, "The concepts behind, and methods for, developing partnerships, collaborations, networks, and other structures with all stakeholders and within communities served." The SWOT analysis assignment identified internal stakeholders, such as library leadership and potential external partners (The Smithsonian). The evaluation also explained how these partnerships should be fostered to ensure that the special collection thrives.

Annotation 8E states, “The concepts behind, issues relating to, and methods for, principled, transformational leadership.” The Career Development project that I completed In INFO 5000 meets this competency because it taught me to develop my self-leadership. The assignment helped me develop the skills to be assertive and take agency in my professional development. In the assignment, I completed joined three (3) professional organizations: American Library Association (ALA), Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), and the Georgia Library Association (GLA). Also, I attended two online webinars that focused on trends in information centers and services in Africa's continent. The other webinar focused on trends in standards of data cataloging and curation. The titles of the online webinars are (click on links to view each webinar's description) Information Science in Africa: Past, Present and Future; and Introduction to the W3C Data Catalog Ontology (DCAT).
This assignment encouraged me to be reflective about what I learned from the webinars. Besides learning about the trends, it was rewarding to learn from Africa's information professional experts. My biggest takeaway is that although the information science profession and research are advancing in African countries with major cities, efforts are still needed to include smaller institutions located in smaller cities.

agencies." Our project planning team was assigned a budget of $50,000.00. We were not required to have to spend all of the funds allocated to us because we could roll over the funds for the next fiscal year. Our task was to research and create a budget of resources, both human and non-human, to deliver an employment fair. The total expenditure of our project was $11,473.48. We projected that we would be able to continue the job fair for the next three years.
Annotation 8D states, "The concepts behind, and methods for, developing partnerships, collaborations,
networks, and other structures with all stakeholders and within communities served." This project plan is an excellent example of how the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) offers best practices in stakeholder management. PMBOK defines stakeholder management as the process of analyzing, defining, engaging, and planning people and groups that will either benefit or be impacted by the activities of a project.
