  • INFO 5200, Information Organization Project
  • The purpose of the IOP is to give students hands-on experience the design and development of an information organization system.
  • April 2020 (Spring Semester)
  •  Final grade in the INFO 5200 course:  B
The attached artifact of learning meets Competency 3 because of the following:

Annotation 3A states, “The principles involved in the organization and representation of recorded knowledge and information.” The attached IOP for Atlanta Soto Zen Center Library fulfills this requirement because it includes subject representation of the items in a collection. Annotation 3B requires that I demonstrate evaluative skills.  The system I designed also includes a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) for continuous performance improvement. Annotation 3C requires that the system uses best practices and standards in cataloging, metadata, indexing, and classification.  The project meets the requirements of Annotation 3C because it utilizes the guidelines set by the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records so that users can accomplish the tasks to Find, Identify, Select and Obtain items in the system.

The information organization system addresses a real-world problem for the library, where I practice zen meditation.  Feedback from the center’s members exposed that the library lacked a user-centered design; it was difficult to find books; and the circulation of library items needed to be automated.   It was also revealed that members of the center were unaware of the library service.

  • INFO 5210- Introduction to Cataloging and ClassificationDescriptive Cataloging using RDA and MARC21
  • The purpose of the assignment is to 1) Express clearly several core but general theoretical concepts in providing description and access control over, and subject representation of, information resources; 2) Express clearly several core but more specific theoretical concepts related to resource description and access and subject representation; 3) Successfully negotiate the elementary use of several key tools in resource description and access and subject representation, which are:  MARC 21 Bibliographic data format; Resource Description and Access (RDA), new cataloging rules; The family of functional requirements models (FRBR, FRAD, FRSAD) and the Library Reference Model (LRM).
  •  October 2020 (Fall Semester)
  • Final grade in the INFO 5600 course:  A
The attached artifact of learning from INFO 5210 meets Competency 3 because of the following:

Annotation 3C states, “The systems of cataloging, metadata, indexing, and classification standards and methods used to organize recorded knowledge and information.”  The assignment, Descriptive Cataloging using RDA and MARC 21 utilizes an elaborate cross walking RDA and MARC21 standards to record the descriptive attributes of information resources into catalog records.  RDA guides what information to look for to catalog an information resource’s attributes.  MARC 21 provides details on how to format the description into the catalog record.

My biggest takeaway from this assignment is that cataloging requires mindfulness and a technical understanding of the current cataloging practices.   I mean that each information resource needs to be carefully observed and evaluated to capture the attributes accurately.  It also helped me have reference materials, both theoretical and technical, to be sure that my approach to recording the attributes of information resources was precise.  Although this assignment took many days (and nights) to complete, it instilled in me an appreciation for good cataloging practices.  Good cataloging practices improve the likelihood that the user will retrieve the information resource.

  • INFO 5707- Data Modeling for Information Professionals
  •  Final Project-  Asset Inventory Management System
  • The purpose of the final project is to demonstrate my knowledge and skills in data modeling, database management and Structured Query Language (SQL) syntax .  The final project offered me an opportunity to show my skills in applying the Entity-Relationship conceptual design principle; my ability to develop a database in the MySQL database management system; And to describe how database technologies address the business activities and needs of organizations.
  • May 2021 (Spring Semester)
  • Final grade in the INFO 5600 course:  A

The attached artifact of learning from INFO 5707 meets Competency 3 because of the following:

Annotation 3B states, "The developmental, descriptive, and evaluative skills needed to organize recorded
knowledge and information resources."  I have mastered this competency by applying Entity-Relationship (ER) conceptual design model to evaluate the integrity of the database design.  I used the ER model to ensure that the database design was complete, accurate, consistent, and met business requirements to achieve data integrity.  Annotation 3C states, "The systems of cataloging, metadata, indexing, and classification standards and
methods used to organize recorded knowledge and information."  Also, I met this requirement by designing the data dictionary for my team's final project.  Data dictionaries document the database design decisions and standardize data entry.  The final project meets this competency because its data dictionary serves as a standard for organizing the information within the database.
