  • INFO 5740, Digital Library Prototype and Digital Library Review
  • The purpose of the Digital Library Prototype is for students to apply their knowledge from the course to create a digital library using a web publishing platform for digital collections, Omeka.net.  Also, students work in teams using Slack which is an online collaboration tool.
  • April 2020 (Spring Semester)
  • Final grade in the INFO 5740 course:  A
The attached artifact of learning meets Competency 4 because of the following:

Annotation 4A states, “Information, communication, assistive, and related technologies as they affect the resources, service delivery, and uses of libraries and other information agencies.”  The attached Digital Library Prototype fulfills this requirement because it uses Dublin Core metadata standards to retrieve records.  Using a standard helps to increase the usability of the system. Annotation 4B states, “The application of information, communication, assistive, and related technology and tools consistent with professional ethics and prevailing service norms and applications.  The prototype was developed on the Omeka.net platform, which is a 508 compliant web service.  See Omeka.net accessibility statement https://info.omeka.net/signup/accessibility/  The digital library is accessible to all web users.  Annotation 4C and 4D were addressed through the utilization of the features and plug-ins of the Omeka.net system.  A screenshot of all the plug-ins is attached at the end of the file below.  The purpose of the plugins was to increase the digital library's efficacy (4C) and increase that the search results were relevant to the users.

The purpose of the digital library I developed was to provide various formats to represent endangered animals' phylogenetic relationships in the United States.  The target users for the system are undergraduate biology students.

  • INFO 5223, Metadata for Information Organization and Retrieval I, Creating Metadata Records Project
  • The purpose of the assignment is to gain hands-on experience with creation of metadata records in the most widely used metadata schemes.
  • August 2020 (Summer Semester)
  • Final grade in the INFO 5223 course:  A
The attached artifact of learning meets Competency 4 because of the following:

The Creating Metadata Records Project assignment meets 4B, which states, “The application of information, communication, assistive, and related technology and tools consistent with professional ethics and prevailing service norms and applications.”  The 4B annotation is expressed by the use of metadata standards to complete the project.  This project could not be accomplished without the communication that was necessary to collaborate with my team members (Team Maple).  The tools used to accomplish this project included collaboration and video-conferencing tools and a text editor for code tool.

When I reflect on this assignment, I enjoyed most about it because my team worked efficiently and quickly.  First, we chose a group leader.  Second, the leader delegated tasks that were gracefully accepted by the group.  Third, we set timelines to complete the tasks.  Lastly, we re-grouped and synthesized our tasks by checking each other’s work to ensure that they met the group's standards.  It was a great group work experience and perhaps one of the best I have experienced.
