  • INFO 5223, The Portal to Texas History Metadata Exercise
  • The purpose of this assignment is for students to gain hands-on experience with metadata creation using the UNTL metadata scheme based on Dublin Core standards.
  • June 2020 (Summer Semester)
  • Final grade in the INFO 5223 course:  A
The attached artifact of learning meets Competency 2 because of the following:

Annotation 2A states, "Concepts and issues related to the life cycle of recorded knowledge and information, from creation through various stages of use to disposition." In the attached list of digital library objects that belong to The Portal to Texas History digital library, I created metadata using the UNTL metadata scheme. This exercise fulfills this competency requirement because I employed multiple resources in creating metadata for the digital objects I was assigned.  This was accomplished by analyzing semantical information for each element.  After analysis, data was entered to generate a record for each digital object.  Through this assignment, I learned the lifecycle of metadata creation.

Annotation 2C states, "Concepts, issues, and methods related to the management of various collections."  The most significant benefit to me about this assignment was that I gained exposure to administering electronic records in the UNT Texas Patents digital collection.  I feel that it was an excellent opportunity to see the technical features of the digital library.  I also learned methods of entering the data to create a full record and check my work for errors.  This assignment has opened my mind to advancing my career in metadata analysis and digital collections.

  • INFO 5600- Information Access & Knowledge Inquiry, Final Project I & II
  • To give the students experience in developing an instructional information service for specific clientele in a particular setting
  •  October 2020 (Fall Semester)
  • Final grade in the INFO 5600 course:  A
The attached artifact of learning from INFO 5600 meets Competency 2 because of the following:

Annotation 2C states, “Concepts, issues, and methods related to the management of various collections.”  INFO 5600 Final Project I & II meets this requirement because it employs methods such as identifying the user and user needs, promotion, and evaluation.  The project is a Zen meditation resources pathfinder for users of a special library located in a Zen meditation center. The users of the library are seeking information on how to improve their zen practice.  The pathfinder supports the learning of users new to the library and also new to zen information resources.  Also, users familiar with zen will find information in the pathfinder to refresh their basic knowledge of zen practices.

The pathfinder aims to support users' information-seeking goals in contemplative arts (mindful meditation).  The users are identified as possessing a basic understanding of zen meditation practice.  The pathfinder tool's effectiveness will be evaluated on how easy and quickly the user can find the information they seek.  The usability of the tool will be measured by a voluntary survey embedded in the online pathfinder.
