  • INFO 5000- Information and Knowledge Professions , Job Description (Job Advertisement Analysis) Project
  • The purpose of the Job Description Analysis assignment:  1) To let students understand the process of research (data collection, analysis, interpretation, and visualization) and produce an enhanced resume/CV and cover letter for themselves. Here are the detailed instructions for this project:
  •  September 2020 (Fall Semester)
  • Final grade in the INFO 5000 course:  A
The attached artifact of learning from INFO 5000 meets Competency 5 because of the following:

Annotation 5D states, "Information literacy/information competence techniques and methods, numerical literacy, and statistical literacy."  The Job Description Analysis assignment required me to demonstrate data literacy by using an analytical tool called Voyant.  Voyant is a text analysis tool that allows the user to visualize text analyses in engaging and interactive ways.  The assignment allowed me to demonstrate my competency in research and the use of data analysis tools. I chose to analyze current trends in job descriptions for cataloging librarian positions.

I discovered the following trends in the job analysis of a cataloging librarian:  1) Employers are looking for talent that possesses soft skills such as relationship-building among inter-department units; 2) Talent with experience working in a library setting is highly desired, and; 3) Previous work experience similar to the advertised role is also preferred for entry-level positions.

I also found it insightful that there were three types of cataloging librarians:  Faculty, Non-faculty, and Assistant.  The faculty positions required more soft skills because the job responsibilities are to manage stakeholders, multiple projects, and to attend professional events.  The non-faculty positions’ responsibilities focus on technical skills because they include data management responsibilities and applying cataloging and metadata standards.  Assistant cataloging librarian responsibilities included customer service, copy cataloging, and record management.

  •  INFO 5600- Information Access & Knowledge Inquiry, Final Project I & II
  • To give the students experience in developing an instructional information service for specific clientele in a particular setting
  • October 2020 (Fall Semester)
  • Final grade in the INFO 5600 course:  A
The attached artifact of learning from INFO 5600 meets Competency 5 because of the following:

The Final Project, I & II for INFO 5600, meets annotation 5E, which states, "The principles and methods of advocacy used to reach specific audiences to promote and explain concepts and services."  The project is a Zen meditation resources pathfinder for users of a special library located in a Zen meditation center.  The project also meets annotation 5F, which states, "The principles of assessment and response to diversity in user needs, user communities, and user preferences."  The pathfinder contains a user survey that gathers feedback about the effectiveness of the website.  The survey aims to assess any additional user needs and integrate the feedback into the website design.

The purpose of the overview is to communicate the purpose, audience, and evaluation plan of the pathfinder.  The purpose of the pathfinder is to support users' information-seeking goals in contemplative arts (mindful meditation).  The users are identified as possessing a basic understanding of zen meditation practice.  The pathfinder tool's effectiveness will be evaluated on how easy and quickly the user can find the information they are seeking.  The usability of the tool will be measured by a voluntary survey embedded in the online pathfinder.
